14 killed in AP as rains continue to lash Kerala

New Delhi, Sep 19 (UNI) At least 14 people were killed due to heavy rains in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Telangana regions as many parts of Kerala and a few areas of Lakshawdeep were also lashed by showers today.

Two girl students of Karanjia Girls'High School were killed when lightning struck them yesterday near Godhagaguri village in Orrisa, police said.

The two victims were on their way back home by their respective bicycles when the mishap took place.

In North-West parts of the country sultry weather conditions prevailed in the plains of Punjab and Haryana in the absence of rains during the past 24 hours.

However, parts of Himachal Pradesh experienced light to moderate rain since last night, dipping the temperatures in the state.

Barring Nangal Dam site, which recorded 28 mm rainfall overnight, there was no rainfall in Punjab and Haryana.

Chandigarh and its adjoining areas experienced partially cloudy sky with the Sun showing up occasionally throughout the day. Humid conditions prevailed in the city with relative humidity touching 88 per cent.

Several places in Kullu, Kangra, Mandi, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Shimla and Una districts received moderate to heavy rains till 0830 hours today.

Meanwhile, Traffic was badly affected in many parts of Telangana and coastal Andhra region due to intermittent rains.

Over 3000 families were shifted to relief camps in the worst-hit Karimnagar district.
