Sensex touches 12,071 pts on firm global cue
Mumbai, Sept 18: The Bombay Stock Exchange Sensitive index (Sensex) touched the four month high figure of 12,071.30, which is also 61 points more than the previous close, on a day of minimal volatility, as the Asian indices firmed over US data, raising expectations of no hike in US Fed rates at their meeting on wednesday. Similarly the S&P CNX Nifty gained 14.15 points or 0.4 per cent, to close at 3,492.75 The benchmark Asian indices other than Japan - closed due to Public holiday - Hong Kong, South Korea, Taiwan and Singapore rose between 0.8 - 3 per cent.
The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 2,878 crore, which is lower than Friday's Rs 3,456 crore.
The breadth too in the broader market turned positive in favour of 1286 acvances as against 1,199 declines, out of total 2568 scrips that traded the BSE counters today Amongst the BSE sectoral indices Metals closed 0.94 per cent down tracking weak prices on the Londoan Metals Exchange, Oil&Gas was down by 0.30 per cent as the crude oil prices firmed up once again and Consumer Durables was down by 0.09 per cent. however, the gainers were led by FMCG up 2.19 per cent, Capital Goods up 1.06 per cent and Bankex up by 0.30 per cent.
Major gainers on the BSE-30 index were Reliance communications up by 2.88 per cent to Rs 320.70, HLL up by 2.87 per cent to Rs 250.55, HDFC up by 2.70 per cent to Rs 1,366.40, ITC by 2.60 to Rs 187.10, Cipla by 2.26 per cent to Rs 260.35, L&T up by 2.06 per cent to Rs 2,694.30, SBI by 1.16 per cent to Rs 991.10, Dr Reddy's Lab by 1.13 per cent to Rs 754.75, NTPC up by 1.02 per cent to Rs 128.95 and BHE: up by 0.98 per cent to Rs 2,290.85.
Besides the losers on the index were Tata steel down by 1.24 per cent to Rs 498.15, Tata Motors down by 1.22 per cent to Rs 859.00, Maruti down by 0.82 per cent to Rs 941.45, Reliance Industries down by 0.74 per cent to Rs 1,132.05,indalco down by 0.74 per cent to Rs 168.15, Satyam computers down by 0.68 per cent to Rs 823.20, ONGC down by 0.65 per cent to Rs 1,155.35, TCS down by 0.63 per cent to Rs 996.80, Bharti Airtel down by 0.59 per cent to Rs 443.35 and ICICI down by 0.39 per cent to Rs 644.70.
