Police canes violent agitators

Aurangabad, Maharashtra, Sep 18 (UNI) A ''morcha'' organised by the State non-teaching staff here today turned violent forcing the police to resort to lathi charge.

The agitators, lead by Suresh Patil and others, started from the Kranti Chowk here and turned violent upon reaching the Kile-Ark locality, assistant commissioner of police Navin Chandra Reddy said.

The agitators insisted upon breaking the police baricade and entering the venue of the State Cabinet meeting even after Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil appeared before them to receive their memorandum, Mr Reddy said.

The police were forced to cane the agitators when they indulged in stone pelting, Mr Reddy said.

The police have detained few agitators, including the leaders, police sources said.

Apart from the ''morcha'' taken out by the non-teaching staff, twenty other ''morchas'', including one by the Shiv Sena, were organised to highlight various issues on the occasion of the commencement of State Cabinet meeting here today. The Sena ''morcha'', lead by its executive president Uddhav Thackeray, started from Kranti Chowk and ended peacefully at the Aurangpura locality.
