Northeast sports climbing competition begins
Imphal, Sep 18 (UNI) The 8th Northeast Zone Sports Climbing competition began at Kangla rock wall here today.
Some 106 sports climbers, including girls, from the north eastern states were participating in the competiton.
Manipur has maximum number of contingent. Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Asom, Meghalaya have also sent its teams to take part in the tournament.
Maj Gen BK Chengapa, IG of Assam rifles (south) and BB Sharma, Director, Youth Affairs and Sports formally inaugurated the tournament which will continue till September 20.
Maj Gen Chengapa said the sports was an arena where there can be show of camaraderie and there was lots of scope for adventure sports in region. BB Sharma, Director Sports, said the geographical terrain of the region favours growth of adventure sports.
Chairman of the North East Zone Sports Climbing Committee (NEZCC) N Ibungochoubi said the tournament was a qualifying round for the national climbing competition which will be held later in New Delhi.
Convenor of the NEZSCC Dr L Surjit said the competition was being organised by the NEZSCC under the aegis of the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). The Manipur Mountaineering and Trekking Association (MMTA) is the host of the competition.
