AIADMK fields Ex MP Rajan Chellappa for Assembly bypoll

Madurai, Sep 18 (UNI) The opposition AIADMK has fielded former MP, V Rajan Chellappa for the by-election to the Madurai Central Assembly constituency.

Accompanied by a large number of supporters and party workers, Mr Chellappa filed his nomination papers before the returning officer earlier today.

The ruling DMK is yet to nominate its candidate.

Regarding the large number of party workers and supporters accompanying the candidate to file his nomination papers, in violation of norms, Returning Officer and RDO S Mookaiah said video clippings of the same would be sent to the Election Commission for necessary action.

The bypolls were necessitated following the death of former Speaker P T R Palanivel Rajan, who was elected to the State Legislature in the May Assembly polls.

As per schedule, the filing of nominations would close on September 23, while the scrutiny is slated for September 25. The last date for withdrawal of nominations is September 27.

Polling would be held on October 11 and counting of votes will be one on October 14.
