WB govt to start cotton farming in four districts

Falta, Sep 17 (UNI) Keeping pace with the global textile demand, West Bengal government is planning to start cotton farming in four districts of the state.

Speaking at an inaugural ceremony of a new unit of Pacific Cotspin in Falta, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said, ''We have decided to start farming in the Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas, Birbhum, Bankura and Bardhaman to stay ahead in global competition.'' The government would also set up a textile park in Howrah, he informed.

''We have got a go-ahead for the project from the Textile Ministry,'' the Chief Minister said.

Meanwhile, the second unit of Pacific Cottspin was inaugurated with an investment of Rs 70 crore.

A company official said the total capacity would be 55,728 spindles, while the production of the unit would be 14,800 tonnes.

The total turnover of the company, a 100 per cent export oriented unit, would be Rs 285 crore at the end of the current financial year.
