TN Govt announces relief package for 12 victims

Chennai, Sep 17 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government has announced an interim relief package for 12 victims of the excesses allegedly committed by the Special Task Force (STF) personnel during the operations to nab Veerappan.

An official release here said that Chief Minister M Karunanidhi has ordered disbursement of relief to those identified as victims of abuse of power and police excesses by Justice A J Sadasiva Commission in fulfillment of a promise made in the State Assembly.

The quantum of relief would be in proportion to the kind of loss the victims suffered.

''While Rs two lakh will be paid as compensation to the survivors of seven people who had died in illegal detention, Rs one lakh will be given to four others, who also had been illegally detained and tortured and Rs two lakh to one person, who had been permanently maimed by the STF atrocity'', the release said.

CPI State Secretary D Pandian welcomed the Government's announcement and urged the Chief Minister to take steps to provide relief to women and other victims, who had suffered at the hands of the STF.
