Rationalist leader Periyar remembered
Chennai, Sep 17: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi today led the state in paying floral tributes to rationalist leader 'Periyar' E V Ramasamy on his 128th birth anniversary here today.
Accompanied by his Cabinet colleagues, Mr Karunanidhi garlanded Periyar's statue near the Simpson Junction.
To commemorate the day, Mr Karunanidhi would be launching the Wasteland Development Scheme by providing two acre of land free of cost to landless agricultural labourers at Tiruvallur later in the day.
AIADMK Fisheries Wing Secretary D Jayakumar and AIADMK headquarters members paid rich tributes to the Dravidian leader by garlanding the statue.
MDMK General Secretary Vaiko garlanded the statue near the Anna Flyover to mark the occasion.
A report from Tiruchirapalli said a large number of DMK leaders led by State Transport Minister K N Nehru and MLAs Anbil Periyasamy and K N Sekharan garlanded Periyar's statue at the Central Bus Stand Area this morning.
Similarly, AIADMK, MDMK and DMDK members also paid tribute to Periyar.
