Mizoram to set up DNA centre

Aizawl, Sep 17 (UNI) Mizoram Home Minister Tawnlulia has said the Mizoram government would prepare a blueprint shortly to set up a full-fledged DNA testing centre here.

Talking to newsmen here yesterday, the Minister said efforts were on to set up a DNA division in the state forensic science laboratory within a span of five years.

The state government would send a detail project proposal for setting up a DNA centre to the Home Ministry, the Minister said adding the government would also take steps to establish a state forensic science laboratory building at the new capital complex at Khatla for which works would commence this year.

'' The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to give us three instruments such as ballistic comparison microscope, video spectral comparator and high performance liquid chromatography within this year, '' he said.

The state government had constituted a state forensic board under the chairmanship of the Chief Secretary fulfilling one of the four directives of the National Human Rights Commission to upgrade forensic science laboratories all over the country.

Pointing out the growing awareness of law and human rights, where the forensic science has become indispensable in criminal investigations, Mr Tawnluia said, '' The primary objective of forensic science is to protect the rights of innocent persons and punish the wrongdoers. We should also realise the importance of forensic science to see that wrongdoers get appropriate punishment and innocent persons are not mistakenly punished. '' UNI BB-SNR SJC AKP1025
