''Made in India'' Cashews to hit the stands
Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 17 (UNI) The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) in its vision 2020 has declared to ensure that 20 per cent of the cashews exported will be value added and marketed with ''Made in India'' brand.
The Vision-2020 presented at the ''Kaju India 2006'', a three-day international buyer-seller meet here, also endorsed that the export of cashew kernels in 2020, would be raised to 2,75,000 Mts as against the present 1,15,000 Mts.
The Vision 2020 was released by Union Minister Oscar Fernandes at the valedictory session of the three-day meet, which saw buyers and retailers from abroad and brokers, quality experts, consultants and people from other supporting services, in addition to Indian exporters.
Presenting the Vision 2020, CEPCI Chairman Walter D'Souza said the CEPCI would strive to increase India's market share, regain a dominant position in the world market and maintain the number one leadership in production, processing, imports and exports. In order to reach this, he said Indian nut production should be increased to 1.9 per million Mts with imports to be maintained at 0.50 million Mts. The vision also requested the Centre to ensure the above production, he added.
The increase in production translated to employment generation of 850 million man days for 1.25 million workers and sustainable Horticulture by one million farmers, it said and added the CEPCI would strive to enhance productivity and competitiveness in the cultivation and post harvest technology of raw cashew nuts by motivating all departments under the ministries of Agriculture.
It said that good manufacturing practices would be formulated on par with world standards by next year to achieve zero defects.
With an aim to meet buyer's expectations, the Vision 2020 said it would intensify programmes for technology upgradation and modernisation of the cashew industry. As part of the initiatives taken by the CEPCI, it would take efforts to export all other cashew products like cashew apple products, CNSL and its byproducts.
It would also try to increase awareness about the nutritional values of cashew and also initiate studies in nutrition in cashews.
In its Vision 2020, the CEPCI had said that it would commence multilateral initiatives to foster cooperative and collective efforts in the promotion of consumption of cashews for healthy development of the world cashew economy.
''Kaju India 2006'' was organised here as part of the CEPCI's Golden Jubilee celebrations.
