Imported Hilsa to add flavour to puja cuisine

Kolkata, Sep 17: With around 20 trucks of Hilsa imported from Barishal in Bangladesh, the Bengali food lovers will frolick to restaurants for fish specialities.

This is for the second time in this season that such a large consignment has been received, clearing agent Dhritiman Pal said.

The imported Hilsa has already been distributed in the important fish markets at Sealdah, Howrah and Patipukur. It is expected that the fish might make its way to the plates of fish-starved Bengalis as it would be available in local markets.

The quantity of imported Hilsa is around 72 tonne, he said.

Hilsa traders had been facing quite a lean season this year.

Even the number of fish in the Padma river declined due to climatic changes.

The fish import from Bangladesh has been considerably low this year compared to last year. While last year 12 trucks of Hilsa were imported daily, the number came down to five trucks this season, Mr Pal added.

The importers said they suffered the most this year due to decrease in the fish production.
