Sikkim to coordinate environmental awareness programmes

Gangtok, Sept 16 (UNI) The Union Environment and Forest Ministry has designated Sikkim as the Regional Resource Agency to co-ordinate the National Environmental Awareness Programmes.

The theme for current year programme is solid waste management, official sources said here today.

The programme would be taken up in all the eight North Eastern states in collaboration with various NGOs, state government departments, Joint Forest Management Committees, Eco-Development Commitees and educational institutes, sources added.

The programme would stress upon a concrete action oriented activity on solid waste management, they added.

Besides, programmes would be taken up for creating environment awareness for effective solid waste management by conducting of rallies, camps, competitions and preparation of educational resource material on environment issues, Forest department sources said.
