Protest against Pope's remarks continue in JK

Srinagar, Sept 16: About 12 activists of different organisations were arrested as massive protest demonstration continued in the Kashmir valley for the second day today against the anti-Islam remarks of Pope benedict XVI.

Meanwhile, the breakaway Hurriyat Conference (HC) headed by Syed Ali Shah Geelani has given a general strike call on Monday in protest against the Papal remarks.

Activists of Muslim Khawateen Markaz, Muslim League, Mass Movement and Wahdat-e-Islami took to streets at Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the summer capital this afternoon.

Raising anti Pope slogan, they later went in a procession to Dalgate after marching through different streets. However, a large number of police personnel deployed there did not allow them to proceed towards the office of United Nations Military Observers (UNMO) at Sonwar.

Later, police took into custody about a dozen activists for violating prohibitory orders.

The activists of Dukhataran-e-Milat also held a massive protest demonstration against Pope at Lal Chowk near here. They later dispersed peacefully.

Reports of demonstrations against Popl's remarks on Islam were also received from several other parts of the valley.
