PM meets Annan, Qatar Crown Prince in Havana

Havana, Sep 16: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today met United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and discussed with him the question of reforms in the UN system and expansion of the UN Security Council.

At a meeting on the sidelines of the 14th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit here, he also discussed with Mr Annan the candidature of Mr Shashi Tharoor, India's nominee for the position of UN Secretary-General.

The spokesman for the External Affairs Ministry told reporters that Mr Annan briefed the Prime Minister on the UN role in Nepal. He said the UN would remain in close touch with India on this issue.

The Prime Minister also met Qatar's Crown Prince Sheikh Tameem bin Hamad al Thani.

The two leaders reviewed bilateral relations and discussed the possibilities of Qatari investment in India, especially in the infrastructure and energy sectors.

The discussions also covered the condition of Indian workers in the Gulf state and providing them improved facilities, the spokesman added.
