Extortion cases on the rise in Mizoram

Aizawl, Sep 16 (UNI) Mizoram police revealed that extortion cases in the state has increased by 40 per cent.

The police officials stated yesterday in a two-day crime review meeting that the extortion cases across the state has increased by 44.44 per cent this year in comparision to last year.

Besides, forgery cases has increased by 20 per cent, misappropriation cases by a whopping 120 per cent and suicide cases by 30 per cent this year.

Of the 1496 cases registered last year under the IPC, Myanmar nationals were involved in 14 cases.

When the officials compared the statistics to neighbouring states, Mizoram had an alarmingly high incidence of IPC crimes.

Mizoram with a population of 9.36 lakh had 3586 IPC crimes during 2004 while Nagaland with 20.96 lakh population had 984 incidents.

States like Meghalaya with 24.21 lakh population had 1684 crime incidences during 2004, Arunachal with 11.44 lakh population had 2256 incidences, Asom with a population of 282.11 lakh had 40,675 crimes, Manipur with a population of 25 lakh had 2535 and Tripura with a population of 33.42 lakh had 3081 crime incidences.
