TN Govt releases 472 life convicts on Anna's Birthday

Chennai, Sep 15 (UNI) The Tamil Nadu Government today released 472 life convicts, including 16 women, on the occasion of the 98th birth anniversary of former Chief Minister and DMK founder C N Annadurai.

The convicts, who had served ten years of imprisonment at various prisons across the state, were released as announced by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on the floor of the Assembly, while replying to the demand for grant of police and prison departments. With the approval of State Governor Surjit Singh Barnala, the prisoners were released as per the guidelines laid down by the Government, according to an official release here.

The practice of releasing life convicts on the occasion of Anna's birth anniversary, which was dispensed with during the previous AIADMK regime, had been revived by the DMK Government.
