Railway revenue up 15.64 per cent
New Delhi, Sep 15 (UNI) Sustaining its growth momentum, the Railways generated Rs 16334.34 crore from freight traffic during the first five months of the current fiscal (April-August) as compared to Rs 14125.13 crore during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 15.64 per cent.
Railways carried 288.81 million tonnes of freight traffic during this period as compared to 262.91 million tonnes carried during the corresponding period last year, an increase of 9.85 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 173529 million during April-August 2005 to 189514 million during April-August this year, an increase of 9.21 per cent.
The earnings from freight traffic during August this year were Rs.
3112.22 crore as compared to Rs. 2786.25 crore during the corresponding period last year, showing an increase of 11.70 per cent.
Railways carried 55.34 million tonnes (MTs) of freight traffic during the month as compared to 51.56 million tonnes of freight traffic during the corresponding period last year, registering an increase of 7.33 per cent.
The Net Tonne Kilo Metres (NTKM) went up from 34067 million during the month of August 2005 to 35429 million during August 2006, an increase of 4.00 per cent.
Of the total earnings during August this year, Rs. 1102.87 crore came from transportation of coal, followed by Rs. 271.31 crore from foodgrains, Rs. 264.79 crore from cement, Rs. 260.65 crore from petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), Rs. 234.81 crore from iron ore for exports and Rs. 166.16 crore from iron and steel for steel plants.
In addition, it earned Rs. 156.15 crore from transportation of fertilizers, Rs. 147.39 crore from raw material for steel plants and Rs. 508.09 crore from other goods.
