Doctor nabbed for sex-determination test on woman
Rajkot, Sep 15 (UNI) For the first time in the city, a doctor was caught red-handed today after he conducted a sex-determination test on a woman to ascertain the sex of her unborn child.
Dr Bharat Bhate was caught immediately after he conducted the test and disclosed the sex of the unborn child to a decoy customer sent to him by state health officials.
Addressing media-persons here today, District Collector Pradip Sharma said the team led by state health department Doctor M S Ranawat raided the clinic of Dr Bhate at Milpara area of the city after he conducted the test.
The teams have recorded all the things in their hidden camera, Mr Sharma said. The doctor was paid Rs 2000 for sex-determination test of a decoy customer.
The raid was conducted after several complaints received against the doctor for doing the sex-determination test, Mr Sharma said.
Sex determination tests are banned in India under the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PNDT) Act. The collector said Dr Bhate in his private clinic has been charging since long, Rs 2000 for the sex determination test and if the woman has unborn baby girl and wanted to abort, the doctor would charge Rs 5000 for same.
