Guwahati, Sep 12 (UNI) The Police today arrested the kingpin of the medical scam Babul Ali from a masjid in the Hatigaon area of the city.

Babul Ali, a government employee, was the mastermind behind the admission racket in the post graduate courses in the three medical colleges of Asom.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Guwahati City, Rajen Singh told newsmen that Babul Ali used to collect the surrendered seats from the central pool and then got them allotted to the candidates who paid him a huge sum.

The government busted the racket about three months back when three undeserving candidates from outside Asom took admission in the post graduate courses of the Assam Medical College.

Each year every medical college has to keep some PG seats for the central pool and students take admission through a common admission test.

Due to various logistical reasons some seats were surrendered at the last moment and generally the next in the merit line gets the seat. But the gang led by Babul Ali used to manipulate through a complex network starting from Health Directorate to Ministry of Health and managed to admit undeserving students.

Most of these students were from Northern India who paid hefty sum to the gang.

Mr Singh said that during the investigation Babul Ali was found to be the kingpin of the racket while some other people of the Health department were also involved in the whole episode.
