Washington, Sep 12 (UNI) Jayant Kadian, a 20-year-old man of Indian origin, who was held in connection with the alleged murder of his mother last year pleaded guilty to a second-degree murder in a court near here.

He did not make any statement during the hearing yesterday other than saying ''guilty''.

His sentencing was set for November 3.

Kadian had psychiatric problems and was under treatment when the crime occurred. He had seen several therapists.

The Washington Post recalled that when his mother Kiran Kadian told him one day last year that she would be taking him to another psychiatrist that afternoon, Jayant snapped. He later told police he grabbed a large kitchen knife and plunged it repeatedly into Kiran Kadian's neck while she stood in the kitchen.

He is the youngest of three children and attended James Madison University.
