Andaman MP to attend disaster mngt seminar

Port Blair, Sept 12: Andaman and Nicobar islands MP Manoranjan Bhakta today left for Japan to attend a Disaster Management seminar, official sources said.

Mr Bhakta would head for Japan with a Parliamentary Committee from New Delhi today, sources told UNI.

''The islands that falls in seismic Zone V often experience minor and major tremors and hence should always remain prepared for such disasters,'' Mr Bhakta said.

A major tsunami that hit the islands on December 28, 2004 killed nearly 3800 people causing a lot of havoc here.

Official sources said the seminar, to be held in the mid-week of September, would focus on disaster preparedness and management techniques.

''I will learn how to effectively deal with a disaster in remote islands in India,'' Manoranjan Bhakta the told newsmen here.

He would also meet the Japan's Tourism Minister and seek their cooperation in rebuilding these affected Islands, Mr Bhakta added.

Besides, Mr Bhakta had planned to meet the business tycoons in Japan, who are investing in different businesses in across Mainland India, to get some investors for these islands.

Foreign investment in these remote islands would provide more employment opportunities and improve the socio-economic status of the people here, Bhakta said.

Experts worldwide would be present in the seminar to share their views of disaster management.
