About Rs 30 lakh looted from UBI branch in Bengal

Kolkata, Sep 12 (UNI) In a daylight robbery, a gang of five armed miscreants robbed nearly Rs 30 lakh from the United Bank of India's(UBI) Laxmiganj Bazar branch at Chandannagore in neighbouring Hooghly district today.

Police here said the gang members, who came by a private vehicle at around noon, first disarmed the security guard, asked the Bank employees at gun point to remain calm and hand over the keys of the vault. They also threatened a few customers of dire consequences if anyone tried to raise an alarm.

Soon they collected the booty, estimated to be Rs 29.40 lakh, and fled the scene after locking the main door from outside and without creating any suspision in the outside market place.

Later when the employees raised an alarm, they were rescued by local people and the police was informed. Soon a massive manhunt was launched to nab the culprits.

No arrest has been made so far.
