Vande Mataram: Matter is closed, says Cong
New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) Reiterating that the Congress has already admitted that a mistake has occurred in proclaiming September 7 as the centenary day of the Vande Mataram, the party today urged the media to treat the matter as closed.
"Rubbing it in is not proper," Congress Spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said, adding "we have already owned up the mistake." Mr Singhvi said the Congress had realised that September 7 had no historical significance as far as Vande Mataram was concerned. It was Mr Shanti Bhushan who had proposed September 7 to be treated as centenary day, he clarified.
But in history a date has a significance and that was why the Congress came out with a clarification, Mr Singhvi said.
Asked whether HRD Minister Arjun Singh should resign for the goof up, he evaded the question, saying the matter has ended with the party's clarification.
In reply to a question, the Congress Spokesman clarified that the Congress was not consulted about the centenary day of the Vande Mataram.
