SC directs NCERT to consider SBAS's plea on textbooks

New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) The Supreme Court today directed NCERT to consider and decide on the representation of Siksha Bachao Andolan Samiti (SBAS) seeking the deletion of objectionable remarks against the Jat community in class XII textbooks of History and Hindi.

A bench comprising Justice K G Balakrishnan and Justice D K Jain issued the orders while diposing off the PIL.

The petitioner had objected against the Jats being called ''plunderers'' for their conduct during the peasant uprising. It had also challenged the ''fascist'' remarks against the community.

The books described Jats as peple who looted everyone and did not spare even the peasants whose cause they were allegedly espousing or championing. This, the petitioner said, showed the entire community in bad light.

The petitioner had sought directions to the Center, CBSE and NCERT to withdraw the books from Class XII syllabus till the objectionable portions in the textbooks are removed.
