Police gun down history-sheeter

Hardoi, Sep 11 (UNI) The Special Task Force (STF) of Uttar Pradesh Police today gunned down a history-sheeter carrying a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head in Sandila area here.

Police Superintendent Kashinath Singh said when police intercepted some suspected motorcycle-borne miscreants, they resorted to firing.

In exchange of fire, one criminal, later identified as Prateek Khatik was killed on the spot. Others, however, managed to escape.

The deceased hailed from Uttaranchal and had at least 36 cases of murder, loot and kidnapping against him.

In 2003, the Uttaranchal government had announced a reward of Rs 20,000 on his head.

Two policemen Shakti Singh and Yogesh Sharma were also wounded severely in the encounter.

According to police, Pradeep had taken a contract to murder Manoj Valmiki of Bareilly and was on way to carry out the killing, when intercepted him. Investigations were on.
