Pachyderm tramples tribal to death

Hardwar, Sep 11 (UNI) An elephant, who ran amok, trampled a tribal to death in the Shyampur range on the Hardwar-Moradabad national highway late last evening.

The tribal died on the spot. He was going from Hardwar to his home at Sidhsrot.

It was with great difficulty that the people from the adjoining village shooed away the herd of tuskers, which had strayed from the nearby forest on the national highway.

Divisional Forest Officer (Hardwar Division) S P Subudhi, along with other forest officials, rushed to the spot. He announced an ex gratia payment of Rs one lakh for next kin of the victim.
