Gujarati literatteur passes away

Ahmedabad, Sep 11 (UNI) Sahitya Academy Award winner Prof Ramanlal Joshi died here last night after a brief illness.

He was 80.

He was former president of Gujarat Sahitya Akademi and Vice President of Gujarat Sahitya Parishad. He was known in the state's literary circles for his contribution to Gujarati literature.

Born in May 1926 at Hirpura village of Vijapur taluka of Mehsana district, Joshi came under the guidance of leading literary figures such as Umashankar Joshi. He became known for his PhD thesis on Govardhanram Tripathi. Later, he was honoured with Sahitya Academy Award Delhi in 1984.

He was the Director of College Develpment Council in Gujarat University and an Emeritus Professor of UGC.
