GO issued for Tiruchi flood prevention scheme: Stalin

Tiruchirapalli, Sep 11 (UNI) The Tamilnadu Government has issued a Government Order (GO) for a mega Flood Prevention Scheme to be implemented in this district at an outlay of Rs 295 crore,Local Administration Minister M K Stalin today said.

Inaugurating desilting and strengthening of bunds work of the flood-prone Koraiyaru, Kudamurutti and Ariyaru Irrigation Channels in the city this morning, Mr Stalin said the DMK Government had fulfilled its election promise by including the scheme in its 2006-07 Budget.

He said the desilting and strengthening of bunds of the irrigation channels running into the city was taken up as an immediate step at a cost of Rs five crore for free flow of rain water.

Launching a scathing attack on the previous AIADMK regime, he said they had put into cold storage a Rs 50 crore flood prevention scheme announced earlier by Mr M Karunanidhi in 2000 when he was the Chief Minister.

If they had taken up the project, the work might have been completed earlier and prevented the floods in Tiruchirapalli last year, he said.

Earlier, he inaugurated an additional building inside the Government Circuit House Complex.
