Cisco, IIT-Roorkee tie up for mobile agent research
New Delhi, Sep 11 (UNI) Cisco Systems, supplier of networking equipment and network management for the internet, has tied up with the Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee, for research on mobile agent technology.
As per the deal, Cisco will set up the networking infrastructure to facilitate research and development on 'mobile agents' in the wide area network (WAN) and wireless environments, thereby enabling research in the area of mobile security in the delivery of mobile agents.
''Cisco's collaboration with IIT Roorkee for the development of mobile agents technology is another step to the advancement of higher education and cutting edge research in India,'' said Cisco Systems (India and SAARC) Senior Vice President Enterprise Jangoo Dalal.
Mr Dalal said mobile agent technology is an emerging paradigm that will lead to seamless information presentation, organisation and efficient retrieval from the internet, adding that it provides an intuitive and efficient platform for developing internet applications in an open, distributed and heterogeneous environment.
''Cisco's networking infrastructure and its expertise in networking and security will allow us to extend the scope of our research and develop mobile agent technology and deliver its benefits beyond the LAN environment,'' IIT-Roorkee Professor of Computing and Head ISC Dr Kumkum Garg said.
The Cisco networking infrastructure will allow students and faculty to conduct mobile agent research in WAN and wireless settings, which will help improve the study environment for networking security protocols and architecture, Dr Garg said.
Currently, these studies are being done in a Local Area Network (LAN) setting, which limits their applicability in networking research.
Cisco networking infrastructure includes Catalyst 6509, ISR 2851, ISR 2811 with Cisco Call Manager Express, IP Phones-7970, 7940 for deploying IP Communication solution based on Call Manager Express with high capacity core LAN Switch and ISR routers as part of the mobile agent solution.
