Centre considering to declare Idukki 'Dairy Development District'

Idukki, Sept 11 (UNI) To streamline the development in the dairy sector in Idukki district, Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar said the Centre is considering to declare the district as 'Dairy Development District'.

Talking to reporters at Thodupuzha near here, Mr Pawar said the central government is considering to declare the district as a 'Dairy Development District' to bring the area under the gamut of the Centre's development programmes in the dairy sector.

Mr Pawar, who is on a three-day tour of the state to study the problems plaguing the agricultural sector, said people in the district were switching to the dairy industry from the conventional agricultural sector and added the development in the dairy sector should be channelised in the proper direction.

He also held discussions with representatives of the local farmers' union to study their problems.

State Fisheries Minister S Sarma, Water Resource Minister N K Premachandran and other local leaders were also present.
