1984 riot victims hold demonstration

New Delhi, Sept 11 (UNI) The victims of the 1984 anti-sikh riots rallied under the banner of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) stage a demonstration in front of Deputy Commissioner's office (West) today demanding the Government to honour its own decisions.

Giving the authorities a deadline of September 25 to fulfill their demands, the victims threatened to start a hunger strike.

Addressed by several leaders, the rally had a strong presence of the old. Among the demands were immediate release of pension/relief to 71 victims in pursuant to the decision of the Council of Ministers on 23 July 2001 that the old and affected by the 1984 riots will now be eligible for adhoc monthly relief/pension even if they have employable children or adult earning member.

They also drew attention of the authorities to 11 cases for relief in pursuant to the Cabinet decision on 7 December 2005 when the state governmet of NCT had approved the eligibility condition that the beneficiaries of the scheme might be allowed to draw pension in the case of death of pensioner to the alive spouse.
