Chennai, Sep 10 (UNI) About 4200 suspected cases of Chikungunya have been reported in the city, according to Chennai City corporation sources.

The sources said the Corporation had initiated a mass drive to contain breeding of mosquitoes and had organised 250 special medical camps during last one month to fight Chikungunya.

The sources said inspections were carried out at about 50,055 households and 1,91449 water stagnated areas since last month in all the ten zones.

The health authorities had undertaken the larva control measure by spraying pesticide. Fumigation was also intensified to kill adult mosquitoes in the breeding spots.

Besides, regular divisional medical camps were carried out, where medicines like paracetomol, aspirin and brufen were distributed.

Health officials confirmed that the residents of north and northern fringes of Chennai were the most affected by Chikungunya.

The authorities have asked the public not to panic and urged them not to go by any hearsay or false beliefs like eating salt fish and drinking donkey milk can cure Chikungunya.

They said the disease could be cured only through proper medication.

So far, no deaths had been reported due to the disease in city and Chikungunya would be eradicated soon, they added.
