UP polls before May, electoral rolls ready by Jan 1: CEC

Lucknow, Sep 9 (UNI) With the Election Commission (EC) ready to conduct assembly polls before May 2007, the revised electoral rolls in Uttar Prdaesh would be published by January 1 next year, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) N Gopalaswamy said here today.

Since the present term of UP assmebly expires mid-May, the EC was prepared to hold elections before May.

The CEC is here alongwith Delimitation delimination M Sarangi and team of officers to discuss various representations about delimitation of assembly constituencies in 16 districts including Lucknow, Rae Bareli, Sultanpur and Kanpur.

The constituencies, which would go for discussions included assembly segments of parliamentary constituencies of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee (Lucknow), Sonia Gandhi (Rae Bareli) and Rahul Gandhi (Amethi).

During his two-day stay in the state capital, the CEC is likley to hear suggestions and complaints in 11 districts -- Lucknow, Hardoi, Shahjahanpur, Kheri, Sitapur, Unnao, Rae Bareli, Sultanpur, Faizabad, Bareilly and Kanpur -- today.

Five districts Bahraich, Gonda, Shravasti, Balrampur and Barabanki would come up for hearing tommorrow, official sources said.

Meanwhile, the CEC also held meeting with the senior electoral officers of UP here and apprised himself about the progress of revision of electoral rolls.
