Sri Lanka army attacks Tigers, 11 soldiers killed
COLOMBO, Sep 9 (Reuters) The Sri Lanka army said it had attacked and overrun several rebel Tamil Tiger bunkers today, with at least 11 soldiers and many rebels killed.
Army spokesman Brigadier Prasad Samarasinghe said artillery and airstrikes had been first used against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rebels in the Muhamalai area of the northern Jaffna peninsula, before ground troops moved in.
''We have neutralised LTTE mortar locations which they were using against our forward defence lines,'' he said. ''Our troops suffered 11 killed and 53 injured.'' REUTERS PDM PM1725
