NSUI sweeps DUSU polls

New Delhi, Sep 9 (UNI) The Congress-affiliated National Student's Union of India (NSUI) grabbed the President, General Secretary and Joint Secretary posts in the Delhi University Student's union polls, results for which were announced today.

According to University Proctor and Returning Officer for the polls, Gurmeet Singh, the NSUI's Amrita Dhawan defeated Gargi Lakhanpal of the BJP-affiliated Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parisahad (ABVP) by over 10,000 votes.

The ABVP's Vikas Dahiya (Vice-President), besides the NSUI's Shashi Kant (General Secretary) and Tarun Tanwar (Joint Secretary) were also elected office bearers of the new student's union.

Over 50 per cent of the over 40,000 students participated in the elections held yesterday amid tight security arrangements. In a first of its kind, 755 electronic voting machines (EVMs) were used in the polls.

The NSUI had bagged all the four top seats last year for which as many as 44 candidates were in the fray this time.
