Muslims call for economic blockade demanding reservation
Imphal, Sep 9 (UNI) The Manipur government has beefed up security in Imphal, Sep 9 (UNI) The All Manipur Muslim Students' Organisation (AMMSO) has called indefinite economic blockade from September 11 in Manipur demanding reservation for Muslims in educational institutes and government jobs.
The AMMSO had demanded ten per cent reservation as the Muslims were quite backward, Mohd Anuwar Hussain, general secretary of the organisation, said Muslims should be helped by the government by providing reservations in employment and educational institutes.
The AMMSO had been on a stir and its members were wearing black badges since August 18. They had organised sit-in protests, burnt effigies of Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh, Speaker Maniruddin Shaikh, Md Allauddin, Minister, and Abdul Salam, MLA, for not taking up the cause of the minorities.
The AMMSO said it will boycott the Secular Progressive Front (SPF) government in the next Assembly elections if their demands were not fulfilled.
Indefinite strike will also be called in Manipur, he warned.
Officials said Manipur Legislative Assembly passed the OBC Bill no 12 of 2006 on March 19 this year and report was awaited on the fixing of percentage for reservation.
