Expansion of BHEL unit to complete by 2006-07

Tiruchirapalli, Sept 9: The expansion programme of Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), Tiruchirapalli unit would be completed by 2006-07, according to executive director S Satyanarayanan.

Delivering the special address at the zonal council meeting of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) here last night.

he said once the expansion programme was completed, the power plant equipment manufacturing capacity of the company would be enhanced to 7,000 mw from the existing 4,000 mw.

He said the company was also drawing up strategic plans to increase its capaity to 10,000 mw.

Though there were speculations whether the final capacity addition could be achieved in the power sector by the end of the tenth plan period. BHEL has been making efforts to meet the requirement of power plant equipment to achieve the target, he added.

He said the Centre has planned a capacity addition of 40,000 mw and 62,000 mw in the tenth and 11th Plan Periods, respectively under the "mission 2012-power for all" programme.

Mr Satyanarayanan said nearly 75 per cent of the power generated in the country came from BHEL equipments and praised the ancillary industries for their crucial role in this achievement.

He said the 12th plan could target a capacity addition of around 72,000 mw and Tiruchirapalli has the potential to emerge as an international centre of excellence in fabrication.
