Displaced people seek proper compensation

Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, Sep 9 (UNI) Tension prevailed at the Peddagadda reservoir under Pachipenta mandal here today as a large crowd gathered at the site and disrupted the arrangements underway for the inaugural function of the project tommorrow.

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy will inaugurate the project tomorrow.

The crowd, mainly the displaced persons had called for an agitation to protest against the government's failure in providing proper compensation for the lands acquired for the project.

Around 300 displaced persons staged a dharna, demanding that inauguration should be done only after settlement of compensation to them.

When the displaced persons tried to obstruct the arrangements for tomorrow's inauguration, police resorted to lathi charge to disperse them.

Following lathi charge, the agitators pelted stones at the police, injuring several policemen.
