US says wants sanctions resolution on Iran

BERLIN, Sep 8 (Reuters) The United States wants the UN Security Council to take up the issue of Iran's nuclear programme and draft a resolution setting out sanctions after more talks between world powers next week, US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said today.

''The American view is that following these discussions on Monday and perhaps some others early next week, we should move this to the Security Council and draft a (sanctions) resolution,'' Burns told reporters in Berlin.

He was speaking a day after a meeting with fellow political directors from Germany, Britain, France, China and Russia in the German capital.

Burns said the political directors planned to hold further talks on how to deal with Iran and its nuclear programme over the phone on Monday.
