Suicide blast near US Kabul embassy, 4 dead

Kabul, Sept 8: A suicide attacker exploded a bomb close to the US embassy in the Afghan capital, Kabul, today, a police official said.

Witnesses said they saw at least four bodies they presumed were dead, and Al Jazeera television reported that at least three American soldiers had been killed in the blast.

The explosion occurred at a major intersection less than 100 metres from the heavily fortified embassy.

More than 2,000 people have been killed this year due to a resurgence by Taliban fighters, which has led to the heaviest fighting since US-led troops toppled the hard-line Islamists in 2001.

While most of the violence has come in the Taliban's southern heartland, there have been increasing attacks in Kabul.
