Speaker chairs C'wealth Parliamentary Conf

New Delhi, Sep 8 (UNI) Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee has emphasised the crucial role of Parliamentarians in overseeing the expenditure sanctioned by Parliament.

"Not only Committees but Parliamentarians in their individual capacity have to be more vigilant so that public money is spent prudently," the Speaker said chairing a workshop on "The role of Parliament in promoting good governance through increased fiscal transparency," at the Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference being held in Abuja in Nigeria yesterday.

Mr Chatterjee pointed out that in Parliament, Ministers have to make a statement on action taken on the reports of the Departmentally-related Standing Committees. This system has made the Executive more responsible.
