Centre to regulate setting up of slaughter houses

New Delhi, Sep 8: The Supreme Court today issued notices to the centre and six states on a petition directing to bring in a uniform legislation to set up slaughter houses and also provide safeguard against danmages to the environment.

The bench comprising Chief Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice C K Thakker directed the respondent to file their reponse within three weeks. The petition also include prevention of child labour in slaughter houses.

Earlier, a counsel for the petitioner said there was no uniform law for regulating the functioning of slaughter houses and they are the main cause of environmental pollution in the areas of their location.

Petitioners Lakshmi Narayan Modi and activists of People for Ethical Treatment of Animals said large number of childrens are being employed and exploited in these slaughter houses in gross violation of labour laws.

The court directed that the matter is to be listed for further hearing after five weeks.
