Scrap Special Eco Zone policy: Yadav

Bhopal, Sep 7: Strongly criticising the Special Economic Zone Act, Janata Dal (United) President Sharad Yadav today called for a national debate to formulate a better policy to promote export and attract foreign investment while maintaining food security.

''The policy of promoting SEZs will ruin the country'', he told newspersons here, adding ''our area of green revolution is being grabbed by 'land mafia' and governments in the name of SEZ''.

Fertile land around Delhi is being grabbed by vested interests.

''What we need is to turn India a low-cost economy instead of going for the China model of promoting SEZ'', Mr Yadav said.

The party will stage 'dharna' at Jantar Mantar in the national capital on September 25, Mr Yadav added. He clarified that the farmer's agitation, led by former Prime Minister V P Singh, was aimed at getting more compensation to them, while the JD(U) was to tally opposed to the SEZ Act.
