EU postpones decision on liquids on planes-EU
BRUSSELS, Sep 7 (Reuters) The European Union postponed any decision on the carrying of liquids on planes but agreed on new requirements for screening electronic equipments, the European Commission said today.
EU security experts met on Wednesday and Thursday to make recommendations after Britain said on August 10 it had foiled a plot to blow up US-bound transatlantic airliners. Officials said the plot involved homemade liquid explosives.
The European Commission said in a statement that experts were working on the screening of liquids.
''Considerable progress was made on the contents of a rulemaking aimed at controlling the movement of liquids through the screening checkpoints in order to mitigate the threat of liquid explosives,'' the statement said.
''Immediate decisions were taken to improve procedures at the screening checkpoints. These relate to a uniform requirement to screen complex electronic equipment, including portable computers, separately, in order to increase the ability of screeners to detect capability of concealed dangerous items.''
