Chidambaram releases commemorative coin on Narayana Guru
Varkkala, Kerala, Sept 7 (UNI) Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram today released a five rupee coin in commemoration of Sree Narayana Guru with a call to uphold the teachings of the great saint-philosopher who always stood against violence and caste and religious discrimination.
''His message of 'one caste, one religion and one God for mankind' has inspired millions of people in the country and it will continue to inspire many more millions in the future generations,'' Mr Chidambaram said at a function organised at the Sivagiri Mutt on the occasion of 152nd Sree Narayana Guru Jayanti Day celebrations.
The Minister said the life of Sree Narayana Guru contained many lessons for contemporary India. ''Every one might have born in a particular religion or caste, but all belong to the larger brotherhood of mankind. We should know that service to humanity is service to God,'' he added.
Stating that the Guru was a great advocate of non-violence, he said the people should never discriminate anyone in the name of caste or religion.
Presiding over the function, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan said everyone should be cautious against the evil forces that tried to divide the people on the basis of caste religion.
Union Overseas Indian Affairs Minister Vayalar Ravi, Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly Oommen Chandy, among others, spoke on the occasion.
