Sensex ends at 11933.21, precipitates gain
Mumbai, Sep 6 (UNI) The Bombay Stock Exchange sensitive index (Sensex) managed to stay above the 11,900 mark as the smallcap and midcap scrips surged in the intra-day trading, backed by metals and oil and gas sectors after crude oil prices declined to USD 68.15 per barrel.
The BSE sensex closed at 11933.21 compared to the previous close of 11904.60 points.
The BSE sensex touched a high of 11983.48, which is highest since mid-May 2006, and a low of 11904.92 during the day.
Similarly, the S&P CNX Nifty rose 3.80 points or 0.11 per cent to settle at 3477.55 points.
The total turnover on BSE amounted to Rs 3,070 crore, which is higher than Tuesday's Rs 2,811 crore.
The breadth too in the broader market turned positive in favour of 1466 advances as against 1062 declines, and 88 scrips remained unchanged out of the total of 2,616 scrips that were traded on the BSE counters today.
Amongst the sectoral indices Bankex went down by 0.52 per cent to 5406.67 points, Consumer Durables was down by 0.26 per cent, and IT was down by 0.23 per cent to 4340.30. Oil and Gas picked up by 0.54 per cent to 5777.76 points as oil prices came down to USD 68.15 per barrel. Metals too soared by 1.99 per cent to 8557.45 points with metal prices soaring on the London Metals Exchange. But, experts are cautious and have advised a ''wait and watch policy'', tracking global cues, before buying the metals scrips.
In the South East Asian benchmark indices, Nikkei, dropped 101.87 points, to 16284.09. The Hang Seng index lost 180.29 points or 1.03 per cent to end at 17258.51.
Major gainers on the BSE-30 sensex were L&T up by 3.57 per cent at Rs 2554.55, Reliance Energy was up by 3.47 per cent at Rs 480.90, Bharti Airtel was up by 2.14 per cent at Rs 426.60, Hindalco was up by 1.82 per cent at Rs 179.10, Tata Steel was up by 1.58 per cent at Rs 521.60, Wipro up by 1.33 at Rs 522.35, Reliance Industries up by 1.07 per cent at Rs 1137.35, Gujarat Ambuja up by 0.86 per cent at Rs 116.65, Dr Reddy's Lab up by 0.67 per cent at Rs 734.45, and ITC up by 0.61 per cent at Rs 188.80.
Losers on the index were ONGC down by 1.83 per cent at Rs 1205.75, HLL down by 1.42 per cent at Rs 239, HDFC Bank down by 1.28 per cent at Rs 862.70, Reliance Communications down by 1.12 per cent at Rs 301.35, TCS down by 1.10 per cent at Rs 995.25, BHEL down by 0.91 per cent at Rs 2266.65, HDFC down by 0.62 per cent at Rs 1312.40, ICICI was down by 0.50 per cent at Rs 610.05, Hero Honda down by 0.47 per cent at Rs 719.25 and Ranbaxy was down by 0.42 per cent at Rs 414.95.
