KIMS to get trauma care centre, cathlab

Hubli, Sep 6 (UNI) The Karnataka Government has decided to set up a trauma care centre and a cathlab at the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) here at a cost of Rs three crore, Medical Education Minister V S Acharya informed today.

Talking to newspersons here, he said the facilities would be ready by March next.

The minister, who laid the foundation stone for the Rs 77 lakh psychiatric block at KIMS, said the block would be ready within six months. Though the Karnataka Institute of Mental Health was located at Dharwad, the block was being added to KIMS as per the directions of the Medical Council of India (MCI), he explained.

To a question, Dr Acharya said while the Centre would be providing Rs 50 lakh for the purpose, the remaining would be contributed by the state government.

He said the government proposed to have a medical college in every district. At present, Gadag, Haveri, Uttar Kannada, Koppal, Chikamaglur, Kodagu and Chamarajnagar did not have medical colleges.

The government was ready to consider proposals to open medical colleges in these districts by education institutions.

Dr Acharya said the KIMS would be celebrating its golden jubilee year from 2007 to 2008. Old students of KIMS had come forward to set up a guest house to mark the occasion, he added.
