BESU students begin indefinite strike
Kolkata, Sep 6 (UNI) Undergraduate students began an indefinite strike in Bengal Engineering and Science University today in protest against the alleged framing of eight students and the authority's 'apathy' to resolve problems in the trouble-torn institute.
The strike has been called by the Bengal Engineering College Students' Union(BECSU). However, the SFI is opposing it.
A BECSU spokesman alleged that the college authorities of the deemed university had deliberately framed eight students in a flase case of ragging.
The students, who were produced in court, had been made to give an undertaking that they would not get involved in any such incident in future.
BECSU said the authorities had done this to cover up its own inability to set things right in the institute, which had been witnessing sporadic violence among rival students groups.
Soumik Basu, a second year student of BESU succumbed last month after being injured during a clash between the supporters of two rival student unions.
The incident, which sent a shockwave through out the state, prompted the authorities to evacuate hostels and call for posting of large police force inside the campus.
