Minister exhorts teachers to make Goa a knowledge-driven society

Panaji, Sep 5 (UNI) Goa Education Minister Luizinho Faleiro today urged teachers to provide the best education to the students.

A teacher should be prepared to assimilate new technologies and advances in education and, thereby, make Goa a knowledge-driven society by equipping students with the appropriate knowledge and skills, Mr Faleiro said after presenting the State awards to five teachers on the occasion of Teachers Day today.

He said the government has taken several steps for the benefit of teachers and students, which includes revision of pay scales of primary teachers, regularizing the services of vocational teachers who have worked on contract for over five years, raising the retirement age of teachers to 60, setting up of state-of-the-art laboratories, and disbursement of interest-free loan to students to pursue higher studies.

Mr Faleiro also announced that computer teachers, who are presently drawing a salary of Rs 2500, will soon be paid a monthly salary of Rs 4000.

The five teachers who received the awards today were Mahindra Phaldessai, Ramesh Gauns, Ms Aruna Fonseca Afonso, Mr Celso Dias and Prakash Dessai.
