Governor seeks update on Prof death probe
Bhopal, Sep 5: Madhya Pradesh Governor Balram Jakhar today sought from the state government 'latest update' on the investigations into the death of Prof H S Sabharwal in Ujjain last week, official sources said.
The latest report was being sought in the backdrop of alleged attempts by ruling BJP to ''shield the guilty'' and massive protest against students vandalism with entire state observing near total and peaceful bandh today amid boycott of teachers day celebrations.
Official sources said the Governor had earlier sent a letter urging Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan for a prompt and impartial inquiry into Prof Sabharwal's death, which drew nation-wide condemnation. Mr Chouhan had since met the Governor twice.
Mr Jakhar, who presented awards to outstanding teachers, also condemned the humiliating treatment meted out to the college professors.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also expressed his anguish over the incident.
As many as 37 people, including nine workers of ABVP and 28 of Congress and NSUI, had been arrested so far in connection with the death of Prof Sabharwal, vandalism at Madhav College and blackening the face of Prof M L Nath. Two ABVP leaders had been arrested on murder charge, being probed by the CID.
